Lore & Background

United enjoyed its most successful era under manager Jim McLean (1971–1993), winning the Scottish League Cup in 1979 and 1980, and the Scottish Premier Division title in 1982–83. The club reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1983–84 and the UEFA Cup final in 1987, where they lost to IFK Gothenburg but received a FIFA Fair Play Award. Domestically, United also won the Scottish Cup twice, in 1994 and 2010.

In Their Own Story

After being ever-present in the top flight from 1959 until 1995, United's status has wavered recently with two relegations. They bounced back immediately on their most recent occasion, winning the 2023–24 Scottish Championship to return to the top flight for the 2024–25 season, where they finished 4th and secured European qualification.
