Gemmell joined Celtic from Coltness United in October 1961, signing the same day as Jimmy Johnstone. He was one of the 'Lisbon Lions' and one of only two players to appear in all 59 major matches for the club during that era. Although he ignored team orders to stay back when Jim Craig had already advanced, his equalizing shot from outside the penalty area became legendary. Beyond his footballing success, Gemmell faced sectarian abuse from some teammates who desired an all-Catholic squad and endured verbal attacks from Rangers fans due to being a Protestant playing for Celtic.

In Their Own Story

In the 1967 European Cup final, with Jim Craig having ventured forward against team orders, Gemmell received a square ball inside the Inter Milan box. Ignoring instructions to remain defensive, he unleashed a powerful shot from outside the area to equalize, sparking the celebration that led to Celtic's first European title and only Quadruple. Later, in 1970, he scored again in a European Cup final defeat to Feyenoord, becoming one of just three British players to score in two different finals.

Gemmell played for Celtic from October 1961 until December 1971. He later joined Nottingham Forest, Miami Toros, and Dundee before retiring as a player in 1977. His managerial career included spells at Dundee (1977–1980) and Albion Rovers (1986–1987, 1993–1994). He was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
