The club was founded in 1887 by Brother Walfrid to alleviate poverty in Glasgow's East End, a mission that shaped its identity from the start. In 2003, an estimated 80,000 fans traveled to Seville for the UEFA Cup final. Despite losing the match, their "extraordinarily loyal and sporting behaviour" earned them Fair Play awards from both FIFA and UEFA.
