McStay signed for Celtic at age sixteen from Celtic Boys Club in 1981. He made his senior debut on 23 January 1982 against Queen of the South and scored his first league goal a week later against Aberdeen. In December 1987, he signed a five-year contract during the club's centenary season, following that with a double-winning campaign in 1988 where he was named both SPFA and Scottish Football Writers Player of the Year. When Roy Aitken left in 1990, McStay became club captain until his retirement after the 1996–97 season.

In Their Own Story

At just 15, McStay captained Scotland to a 5–4 victory over England at Wembley in June 1980, scoring twice and winning Man of the Match. In the 1982–83 League Cup Final, he helped Celtic defeat Rangers 2–1 to claim his first winners' medal. He also scored the equaliser in the 1984 Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen, though Celtic lost 2–1 in extra time after playing most of the match with ten men.
