Lore & Background

Previously used for association football as the home of Derry Celtic F.C. from 1900–1913, the venue was purchased by the Derry County Board ten years after Derry City hesitated to buy it in 1933. While Dean McGlinchey Park hosted most Derry football games for decades, Celtic Park became the county's primary stadium since the 1990s. In 2026, League of Ireland side Derry City played several matches here while their home pitch was upgraded.

In Their Own Story

Floodlights erected over the end of 2007 and start of 2008 first illuminated a National League game against Mayo on 2 February 2008. A major revamp costing £1.8 million began shortly after the 2008 Derry Championship final, adding a new all-seater stand on the Lone Moor Road side with 3,600 seats. Work included control rooms, media facilities, and improved access, completing in time for the Ulster Senior Football Championship against Monaghan on 24 May 2009.

Home football games are sometimes held at Owenbeg, Dungiven, while hurling matches occasionally take place at Lavey or Fr. McNally Park, Banagher. The stadium's capacity was limited to 13,000 for safety reasons before the recent expansion brought it back to about 18,000.
